What To Do If You Have Lost A Pet

What do I do if my pet is lost?

1. Act QuicklyThe sooner you start searching, the better the chances of finding your pet.

2. Check with Local Authorities - contact you local bylaw enforcement, see Found An Animal for a list of which organization to contact based on your location.

3. Contact the Local Vet Clinic - In Drumheller, Valley Vet can be reached at 403-823-5400.

4. Post Online - Share an up-to-date photo and description with local Facebook groups like "Drumheller Pet Lost & Found". Include details such as breed, color, size, collar/taks, and last known location.

5. Search & Alert Your Neighbors - Ask them to check their garages, sheds, under decks, and in other small hiding spots where a scared pet might seek shelter.

6. Use Familiar Scents - Put your pet's litter box, bedding or an article of your clothing outside to help guide them home.

7. Stay Calm - If your pet is skittish or scared, DO NOT chase them or call their name loudly, this can cause them to run. Instead, sit down, avoid direct eye contact, and use treats or familiar sounds to encourge them to come to you.

8. Microchip Info - If your pet is microchipped, ensure your contact information is up to date. Many databases will allow you to alert them that your pet is missing and that you are looking for them.

9. Expand Your Search - If your pet is still missing after a day or two check with local shelters & rescues, update your posts on social media, create physical posters to place around your neighborhood and local business (vet clinic, pet store etc).
